Exploring care of hospital inpatients with substance involvement
This study explored healthcare responses to support substance-involved inpatients. Niki’s team gathered information through review of documented client outcomes, healthcare provider accounts, and representation of clients in health records. They uncovered themes relating to client autonomy, professional liability, client responsibility, the “right” service, and burnout, hopelessness, and helplessness.
Recommendations include:
- Enhance supports for inpatients with complex health needs
- Ensure substance use and addiction services are integrated into all inpatient practice areas
- Support effective harm reduction practices for inpatients
- Develop policies and protocols to support healthcare providers and inpatients.
